Hike & Learn: Summer Foraging

Blackberry season is upon us! Come join us for a foraging day at Hovey Lake. We'll wrap up in time to go to the Moonlit Walk at the Firefly Festival. We'll walk the mowed paths around the meadows, and cut into the woods to also look for mayapples and mushrooms.

• Difficulty: Easy to Moderate 
• Length: 2-4 miles

Blackberries are abundant along the mowed meadow paths. If you're looking for mayapples and mushrooms, prepare to venture off-trail into the woods -- there are no trails here, so it's light bushwacking. We may drive around to various areas for bettery variety.

Afterward, we'll head to the New Harmony Firefly Festival, where we can get dinner from some food trucks.

What to Bring

• Sturdy shoes for hiking
• Long pants and sleeves
• Water (for drinking) and snacks
• Sunscreen and Bug spray

Other helpful items specific to foraging:

• a bucket for berries
• a mesh bag for mushrooms
• pocket guides for fauna (trees/shrubs/fungi)
• ziplocs or other sealed storage containers
• a knife

Schedule

• 2:00 - Meet at Hovey Lake (main lot).
• We'll check-in at the info station before heading to lot W2.

Notes

• Wear long pants and sleeves to help protect from occasional briars and poison ivy.
• There are many burrs that stick to clothing - avoid softer fabrics and stick with nylon or polyester pants to collect fewer burrs.
• Expect some mud in the woods if there has been recent rain.
