Labor Day Mini-Hike: Twin Swamps (+ Opilwalacha Slough)

Celebrate Labor Day with a casual hike near Mt. Vernon, Indiana. We'll check out the cool boardwalk at Twin Swamps nature preserve, which meanders though a cypress swamp. This 1.5mi hike will wrap up in about an hour.

• Terrain: Dirt trail and boardwalks
• Pace: Relaxed

If you want to stick around for a second hike, pack a picnic lunch and plan to eat before we hit our second site - Opilwalacha Slough -- There's no formal trail here - just plan for some exploration along the fields and in the woods in section "BC3" of Hovey Lake FWA. Expect a casual pace, some wandering, and a bit of unknown for this second portion.

What to Bring

• Long pants
• Sturdy hiking shoes or boots
• Water (at least 1L)
• Sunscreen and bug spray (picaradin for mosquitos, permethrin for ticks)
• Walking stick or hiking poles (optional)
• Clean shoes for the car ride home (leave in the car)

Schedule

No strict itinerary. Plan for 1-2 hours outside at each location.
