Short Notice: Morel Hunting

Along with the warm, wet weather, spring brings on an entirely novel adventure. Morel hunting! These mushrooms are prized for their culinary use, though finding them is always a challenge. Join us we learn how to identify, collect, and prepare morels! If we're lucky enough to find some, I'll have a stove so we can cook them at the picnic shelter.

• Difficulty: Moderate (almost entirely off-trail)
• Length: 2-5 miles

I'm aiming to start at 2:00p Eastern (1:00p Central). If you wish to carpool, meet at Lowes (Oak Grove Rd) at 12:15p Central.

What to Bring

• Sturdy shoes for hiking
• Long pants
• Day Bag
• Water (for drinking) and snacks
• Packed lunch (eaten on trail)
• Sunscreen and Bug spray
• Walking stick or hiking poles (recommended)
• Clean shoes for the car ride (leave in the car)

Other helpful items specific to foraging:

• a mesh bag
• a knife
• pocket guides for fauna (trees/shrubs/fungi)

We'll supply kitchen stuff (but you can bring yours too):

• a camp stove + fuel
• large water jug
• paper towels
• cooking oils
• salt/pepper + other seasonings
• a camp table

Notes

• Wear long pants to help protect from occasional poison ivy, ticks, and briars.
• Ticks are horrid this year. Permetherin is the best preventative.
• Expect mud, as we're following 0.5" of rain.
