Along with the cooler weather comes a new mix of fauna here in Southern Indiana. Join the Co-op as we learn how to identify, collect, and prepare a variety of natural food sources on the trails.
- Difficulty: Moderate (entirely off-trail)
- Length: 1-2 miles
What to Bring
- Sturdy shoes for hiking
- Long pants and sleeves
- Day Bag
- Water (for drinking) and snacks
- Packed lunch (eaten on trail)
- Sunscreen and Bug spray
- Walking stick or hiking poles (recommended)
- Clean shoes for the car ride (leave in the car)
Other helpful items specific to foraging:
- a mesh bag
- pocket guides for fauna (trees/shrubs/fungi)
- ziplocs or other sealed storage containers
- a knife
- a mess kit (plate, fork)
- a camp chair
We'll supply kitchen stuff (but you can bring yours too):
- a camp stove + fuel
- large water jug
- paper towels
- a mesh bag for mushrooms
- cooking oils
- salt/pepper + other seasonings
- a camp table
Schedule
- 10:00 - Meet and hike at USI beforehand (optional)
- 1:00 - Meet at Hovey Lake (main lot).
We'll check-in at the info station before heading to lot W2.
- 15:00 - Return to picnic shelter to prepare / cook our findings
- 17:00 - Event ends
Notes
- Wear long pants and sleeves to help protect from occasional briars.
- There are many burrs that stick to clothing - avoid softer fabrics and stick with nylon or polyester pants to collect fewer burrs.
- Expect mud.
